The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the dept. maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the dept. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the dept. from ca. 1920 to 1981. This artificial series consists of newspaper clippings of the regular feature column by William J. Boles. Born in Piedmont, Ala., on 1866 Oct. 10, William Jeptha Boles began his newspaper career at the age of 18 in Decatur. From that time until 1924 he worked for newspapers in Anniston, Birmingham, Mobile, and Cincinnati, Ohio. The Spanish-American War veteran was also active in the Birmingham Commercial Club, a powerful civic organization in the late 19th century. Boles was the first vice-president of the Southern Baseball Association that was formed in 1901. He later took over the Birmingham Barons baseball team. In 1924 Boles joined the Birmingham News where he remained until his death. He covered news concerning business and real estate and also wrote about the city's civic groups. Boles feature column, "This Date in Alabama," first appeared on 1932 July 2. The first column honored the 392nd anniversary of DeSoto's arrival in Alabama. The feature continued until 1944 Mar. Boles died at his home on 1945 Aug. 18.
